What are the requirements to get a driver’s license in Ohio?
To earn your probationary driver’s license, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Complete 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school.
- Hold your temporary permit for at least 6 months.
- Log 50 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) with a parent or guardian.
- Pass the road skills test at your local Ohio BMV.
How do I get my Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC)?
You can apply for your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC) once you turn 15½. Visit your local Ohio BMV to take the written knowledge test and vision screening. After passing, you’ll receive your temporary permit and can begin your driver training.
When can I take my driving test?
You can schedule your road test once you’ve held your permit for at least 6 months, completed your driver education requirements, and logged 50 supervised driving hours. Testing is done at an Ohio BMV Driver Exam Station.
How do I log my 50 practice driving hours?
The Ohio BMV requires 50 hours of supervised driving (10 at night) with a parent, guardian, or licensed adult over 21. Use the BMV 5791 driving log to record your hours—your parent or guardian will sign it before your road test.
How old do I need to be to start driving school?
Students must be at least 15½ years old and hold a valid temporary permit before beginning behind-the-wheel training. You can begin the classroom portion as soon as you meet this age requirement.
Do you offer both teen and adult driving lessons?
Yes. While most of our students are new teen drivers, we also offer behind-the-wheel instruction for adults who are learning to drive or refreshing their skills.
Do you offer online driver’s education?
Yes! We offer two great options:
- Our Combo Course, which includes live virtual classroom sessions plus behind-the-wheel training.
- Our ACEABLE partnership, which provides a state-approved online course you can take on your own schedule, followed by your 8-hour drive time with our instructors.
What do I need to bring to class or driving lessons?
Bring your temporary permit, photo ID, and any required paperwork from registration. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are recommended for drive times.
Where do driving lessons start and end?
Lessons usually begin at our Tiffin office (100 Perry St.), but we also offer convenient pick-up and drop-off within a 25-mile radius. If you live outside our service area, we can arrange a nearby public meeting spot.
How are behind-the-wheel lessons scheduled?
Once you’ve completed or started your classroom portion, you can schedule your 8 hours of drive time directly with us. Lessons are typically 2 hours each, spread across 3–4 sessions.
What type of vehicle will I drive?
All lessons take place in our state-inspected, dual-controlled vehicles that meet all Ohio safety and driver training requirements.
How do I register and pay for courses?
You can register and pay online through our secure Square payment system, or stop by our office to pay in person. Once your registration is complete, we’ll help you schedule your lessons.
What’s your cancellation and refund policy?
Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours before a scheduled lesson. Refunds are available within 7 days of registration, minus a $25 administrative fee.
What if the weather is bad or I need to reschedule?
Safety is our top priority. If weather conditions are unsafe, we may need to reschedule drive times. You’ll be notified as soon as possible, and lessons will be rebooked at no extra charge.
Is Braking Bad Driving School licensed in Ohio?
Yes, we are fully licensed and approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety. Our school license number is 4311-2907.
Do you help students prepare for the BMV road test?
Yes. Our instructors cover all the skills tested by the Ohio BMV, including maneuverability, parking, turns, and lane changes, to ensure students are confident and ready for their driving exam.
Can parents track progress or communicate with instructors?
Yes. Our instructors provide feedback and updates to help parents stay informed about their teen’s progress and areas for improvement.
